Management Profile
David Negron, President
With roughly 18 years of experience as a pianist, trumpeter, and composer, David's
compositional credits range from works for solo piano to complex orchestral arrangements
and big band instrumentals. He has written original compositions and arrangements
for many prestigious groups including the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Young
Sounds of Arizona, and several performaing groups at the University of Southern
California. In 1999, David released an album of piano and ensemble arrangements
entitled Sol y Sombra on the One Light Music record label. In his 6 years as
a film composer, he has amassed credits from MAG International, Focus Films,
BDM Productions, Turn It Off Productions, the Great Canadian Commercial Contest,
the Arizona Department of Health, Neo Fusions, Hereafter Productions, and Warner
Brothers Television. His most recent credits include SLOTS! (2005), Laid To Rest
(2003), Psychotic (2002), Understanding the Night (2001), Accusation (2002),
Unfamiliar (2002), Right of Way (2004), and the Everwood TV Series Website, as
well as several orchestrations for musical theater shows.
In addition to his film music and orchestration career, David has performed and
studied with some of the world's top musicians, including John Thomas, Kye Palmer,
Shely Berg, Bobby Shew, Rocky Winslow, Stefan Karlsson, Bruce Eskovitz, Aaron
Serfaty, Lee Thornberg, Bill Watrous, Clay Jenkins, Dave Scott, Thom Mason, Justo
Almario, Justin Ray, Brian Head, Donald Crockett, Ron McCurdy, and Russ Plylar.
David's ensemble experience ranges from a variety of jazz big bands and combos
to Afro-Cuban and Latin bands, funk/rock groups, choirs, and symphony orchestras,
including the LA-based funk group Faction Jackson, the Bill Watrous Wildlife
Refuge Big Band, and the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra. He is also sought after
regularly as a solo pianist for conferences and large events, and as a piano
teacher for students all around the Phoenix metro area. David holds a Bachelor
of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the Thornton School of Music at the University
of Southern California.
Benjie Messer, Staff Composer/Arranger
Benjie Messer became a staff composer/arranger at One Light Music upon moving
in Phoenix in 2007, and has also begun to establish himself as a trombonist
and singer/songwriter in the Phoenix area. He has years of experience composing
and arranging in classical, jazz, pop, and world settings.
Before 2007, Benjie was a busy freelance performer in Boston, Mass., performing
regularly on trombone and sousaphone with the function band K2, the Hot Tamale
Brass Band, the Jazz Educators Orchestra, and the Metro-Boston Trombone Quartet,
and less regularly with dozens of others classical, jazz, and pop ensembles.
Besides writing and arranging for his own ensembles, he has contributed original
compositions to various chamber music festivals, and could often be found playing
keyboard and singing original songs at Boston coffeehouses. As the co-founder
of funk band Inner Orchestra, Benjie has shared stages with such jazz and funk
notables as George Clinton and P-Funk, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Soulive,
the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, and trombonists Steve Turre and Joshua Roseman.
Benjie holds a Masters in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst and a full certification from the Kodály Music Institute
at New England Conservatory. He has taught private lessons on many instruments,
and for four years he directed the music program at Boston’s Learning
Project Elementary School. His teachers have included John Faieta, Pamela Wood,
Susan Cleveland, David Sporny, Yusef Lateef, Andy Jaffe, Yusef Lateef, Richard
Frazier, and Cameron Gates.
